Scent Sample Volunteers
Do you have insulin dependent diabetes?
Want to volunteer in a unique way?
You can play an important part in the training of our Diabetic Assistance Dogs. Eyes Ears Nose and Paws needs a fresh supply of scent samples from people with insulin dependent diabetes for our dogs-in-training as they work toward becoming Diabetic Assistance Dogs. Taking the sample is as simple as wiping your forehead (and recording blood glucose!).
Scent Sample Volunteers receive labeled ziplock baggies and gauze pads. When volunteers test their blood glucose, they also use a gauze pad to wipe their skin, place it in the baggie, and record their glucose reading. With scent samples taken at times when blood glucose is in high, low, and normal ranges, Eyes Ears Nose and Paws can train its dogs to recognize the associated changes in body chemistry and alert their human partners to highs and lows.
Volunteers can be located anywhere in North America, as they may receive kits and send in samples through the mail or drop them by our office. During periods when we have sufficient scent samples, we will put volunteers on our resource list and make contact when we need to collect more samples.
Join the team -- contact us to see if we need more volunteers now; help us spread the word by printing and putting up a flyer, or learn more by downloading the scent sample volunteer questionnaire.
