Paws for James

On behalf of our son, James, thank you for reading our story!

James came into this world in September 2014 with a bang and hasn’t slowed down yet! I like to call him “extra.” He is extra energetic. Extra loud. Extra empathetic. Extra honest. All the extras. There is no middle ground with him. You never have to guess what is going on in his mind and in his heart. He expresses himself without fear or judgment and owns all the parts of who he is. He loves baseball, swimming, climbing, animals, video games, and his family.

In April 2022, I was at work when the school called that my son was in a medical emergency. He was unresponsive, had vomited, fell and hit his head, and was being carried to an ambulance. The fear that ran through my body was life altering. Once we arrived at the hospital, we were informed that James had suffered several seizures. With no family history, and no prior health setbacks, we were floored to learn this. Since that time, James has had several more seizures, each requiring medical transport to the Children’s Hospital. Our team of doctors, nurses, and epileptologists have worked hard on his case and the work is still ongoing. Unlike convulsive seizures, James has been diagnosed with Complex Partial Seizures / Focal Impaired Awareness Seizures (and possibly Panayiotopoulos Syndrome). When seizing, James is immobile and unresponsive. Currently there are no monitors on the market to alert to these types of non-convulsive events. Each time he has a seizure, he vomits and that leads us to our greatest fear of aspiration. We believe having a seizure alert dog to monitor and alert us during a seizure would be so helpful, specifically during the night. Having a medical alert dog would afford him privacy, comfort, and protection.

Please consider donating to our cause. Thank you!

About Client Fundraising Donations

You can make a donation directly to EENP to support an assistance dog placement with James Norris using this donation form. You will receive an email confirmation of your donation sent immediately, but the donation total and your name and comments may take up to an hour to update on the site. Your donation made on this page will offset the placement and training fees that EENP will charge for James's placement. We will let James and his family know that you made a donation and will keep them updated on the total amount raised, but will not share the amount of individual donations with them.

The placement and training fees that EENP charges for our assistance dog placements cover less than half of the cost to raise, train, and place an assistance dog and then support the placement for the life of the partnership. If donations are received in excess of James's placement fees, those donations will go toward EENP's general operations, supporting the full cost of our placements with James and other clients.

Eyes Ears Nose and Paws is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, and donations to EENP are generally tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. However, please note that donations made in support of a placement for a particular individual are generally NOT tax-deductible, per IRS guidance (see IRS Publication 526, page 6, column 2, "Contributions to Individuals", second bullet). If tax deductibility is important to you, please speak with your tax professional before donating to be sure that your donation is made in a way that meets your tax requirements.
